Marudai

Form Object

One of many types of Japanese looms, the Marudai is used in the art of kumihimo, or Japanese braiding. Kumihimo cord was first created by a form of finger-loop braiding. Later tools such as the Marudai and the Takadai were employed to make more complex braids in shorter time. The most prominent historical use of the cords was by Samurai as both a functional and decorative way to lace their lamellar armor and their horses' armor. Kumihimo cords are now used as ties on haori jackets and obijimes, which are used for tying on an obi (kimono sash). Look for some examples of kumihimo on our soon to come jewelry page.

Our Marudai are custom and handmade to to the height you specify, and are made out of dense poplar wood to avoid snaring your fibers.

Please allow three weeks for your marudai to be completed. It will ship in two boxes for easier handling, so simple assembly will be required upon receipt. Instructions and all hardware necessary will be included. To use your marudai you will also need bobbins, which we do not provide yet, however, they are available from many other retailers on the internet.
